Dear Lone Peak Family,
Another summer break is on its way. We want to help you motivate your child to read all summer long. Summer reading helps to promote reading growth in fluency and comprehension. More importantly, it can help to develop a love of reading.
This summer, we will promote summer reading through the use of a reading log. Children can record the minutes they spend reading on the log. In addition, any time spent on Lexia Reading or participating in a library program can be recorded on the log. In this way, we can honor student choice while reading.
Students will be able to earn different awards based on the number of minutes they read. Students who read 500 to 999 minutes will receive the Brave Award. Students who read 1000 to 1499 minutes over the course of the summer will earn the Braver Award. Students who read 1500 to 2000 minutes over the course of the summer will earn the Bravest Award. Each award level will also be able to spend school dollars at the Lone Peak Reading Store next September.
**Logs are due to teachers on Friday, August 28, 2020.**
If you need suggestions about what books your child should be reading, there are many websites to access. Here are some recommended lists for your reading use.
No matter what reading lists you choose, there are important ideas to consider when choosing a “just right” book for your student.
- Can they read the material with few mistakes?
- Does the book make sense to them?
- Are they able to answer questions about the events and characters in the book?
- Is the book interesting to them?
We hope your child enjoys this summer reading challenge. We hope to give out many prizes next year!
